I just wanted to let parents know that next Tuesday, February 7, 2012 we will be having a Math test on Chapter 11 Multiplying/Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers and on Friday, February 10, 2012 there will be a science test on Chapter 8 Weather and Climate.

Grade 2B is really enjoying Catholic School Week.  On Tuesday they met their Grade 6B buddies.  The sixth graders read to the second graders. 

Wednesday was pajama day.  The children had a very comfortable day.  In the afternoon Grade 6B came again.  Together 6B and 2B made a unity quilt.

Tomorrow the children are looking forward to the volleyball game.

I want to thank the Catholic School Week Committee for their hard work in planning all the activities.  Also thank you to Ms. Richardson and the children of 6B.

In grades K2 and 1 we have begun looking at architecture for our exciting new curriculum.  Grades 2, 5 and 6 are learning about drawing portraits while grade 4 is finishing up on learning to draw the figure. Grade 3 is working on making “Yackety Yack” puppets while mastering their folding, cutting and gluing skills.

Thanks again to everyone who has sent paper rolls into the art room.

The fifth grade will have a Math test on Thursday, January, 26, 2012 on Chapter 10 which is adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  Also just a reminder that all Science projects are due on Monday, January, 30, 2012.

Here are a few scenes from some of the work we did this week!

Experimentation and abstraction have inspired grade 3 with their paintings. First we used a cup dipped in black paint to created and interesting design on paper. The following two weeks have been spent using primary colors and white to mix colors and paint in the circle designs. After completing the paintings the children were asked to write artist’s statements to accompany their art on Artsonia.

Marc: “My favorite part of this art work was mixing colors and seeing colors I’ve never seen before.”

Emma L: “What did I learn while creating this artwork?  I learned that art doesn’t have to something you see.”

Matt: “What I like about my painting is that I created a purple and blue – PLUE.”

In grade 5 students created a comic strip character and painted a watercolor portrait and followed up by drawing a one page comic. The comics were thoughtful, carefully drawn and have a great sense of humor! Finally in grade 4

students have been hard at work learning about proportion and are creating human figures.  We have been comparing and contrasting in order to create drawings of people who look like they are able to run, jump and move.

Thank you to everyone who has been sending in recycled materials.  You’ll be surprised to see what we can do with a paper towel roll! We are honored to have received a Boston Foundation of Architecture grant for our updated architecture curriculum! If you have any old child-friendly digital cameras that you don’t need, feel free to send them to the art room for the kids to use in class!

We will be traveling to China for our next trip. We hope to be celebrating Chinese New Year while we are there. Stay tuned….
