Grade 1B Enjoyed Catholic Schools’ Week

It was a fun filled learning week for the children in grade 1B. They wore their crazy hats in class on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday were buddy days. They got to know their 4th grade buddies in Miss McCoog’s class. The older children read to them and some of the first graders got to show off their reading skills for their buddies. I was impressed with the conversations and work that was occurring. They really liked Pajama Day! Everyone was happy with the books they bought at the Book Fair. Thursday was Sports’ Day and Pizza Lunch! I was not at the Volleyball Game , but I heard it was a lot of fun!!! The week ended with Mass and the school picture . All in all, it lived up to the theme of Catholic Schools’ Week-Faith, Service and academic excellence!!

On the Move…

Grade 1B had an excellent time on their trip to Israel. We packed our bags, filled out our tickets and passports.( authentic reasons to write) The children had jobs and took their responsibilities seriously. (connection to their own lives)The children learned alot about the places we visited- Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Sea of Galilee and much more. Our tour guides were well informed and shared important info with us.(oral language) We used our smartboard for info and our map skills. The children enjoyed the interactive map and pictures. Ella’s grandmother-Mrs. Foley visited our class and shared pictures and her memories of her trip to Israel. They children loved it! Their favorite story was about Shepherd’s Field. Mrs. Foley made it seem like we were right there!!

We will be traveling to China for our next trip. We hope to be celebrating Chinese New Year while we are there. Stay tuned….

1B Math News

Dear Parents,

Before Christmas, your child should have mastered math facts (addition and subtraction) to 12. Please continue to work on these at home with flash cards. We are now exploring counting and number patterns including terms such as more, fewer, odd and even, and ordinal numbers. We have also been practicing skip counting. This is something fun that can also be practiced at home. We have been skip counting aloud and writing by 2′s, 5′s and 10′s. The next few months will be spent working on tens and ones, comparing and ordering numbers and eventually – money. Stay tuned! – Mrs. Hefler

News From Grade 1B

December has been quite busy-

Report cards were sent. Conferences came and went.

Advent has begun! The Christmas Show was fun!

Our Elfie the elf visits every day. Our gingerbread man ran away!

After reading several versions of Gingerbread stories, the children compared characters, settings and endings. The class composed a poem about our gingerbread man. When we came into class the next day, he had run away. The children made a poster about him and asked everyone to be on the lookout for him. We got many responses about where he had been seen. Mrs. Connolly’s class came and left a note on the smartboard for Grade 1B. During writing time, the children in first grade wrote original stories about gingerbread people.

The children are preparing for their trip to Israel. Our passports,tickets, and bags are packed. We’re so excited to be spending Christmas in Bethlehem!!!

The Race

Everyone had a great time at the race on Saturday. The kids ran as fast as they could to cross the finish line! Medals were awarded and smiles could be seen on the little ones faces.

Thanksgiving 1621/2011

The children in Grade 1B learned alot about the lives of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians through listening and reading stories and poems. They acquired information through various activities in their literacy centers including mapwork and charting what it was like in 1620 and compared it to today. Most of the children agreed that they rather live today than back then.(especially when they discovered what the day in the life of a pilgrim /wampanoag child was like) We got to read letters and watch virtual tours of Plimouth Plantation using our Smartboard. Subsequently, we celebrated our own Thanksgiving in the classroom. The children had authentic names from the Pilgrims that were on the Mayflower and created Wampanoag names. The children designed their shirts and hats and helped set the tables. They served each other, enjoyed the food and helped clean up. It was a great time!

Grade 1B Math News

The students should be continuously working on their addition and subtraction math facts to ten. We will be finishing Topic 5 this week. Next, we will move into addition and subtraction facts to 12. Please make sure that students are mastering their facts – use what works best for your child: flash cards, online math games, etc. Thank you! Mrs. Hefler

News From Grade 1B

The children were surprised when workers showed up to install our new smartboard! Miss Joslin(grade 3) invited us into her room for a demonstration while we were displaced from our room. Due to some technical problems , we had to wait to use it. Mrs.Malloy invited us into her room to view a video about bats on her smartboard. On Friday, Mr. Ronquillo got our smartboard started! The children enjoyed working on some math problems and playing Spider Tic Tac Toe with their spelling words. The children are excited about using the smartboard that will be used across the curriculum.

Grade 1B

Grade 1B enjoyed their trip to Honey Pot Hill Orchard this week! The children received compliments from the staff regarding their behavior and manners! When we got back to school, we had our apple donuts and apple cider. YUM! The children helped compose a list of things they enjoyed about the trip. Prior to the trip, we had read different stories about visiting apple orchards- one was a non-fiction story and the other was a fictional story.

The children are making a classrooom graph of their favorite apples. ( so far, the Pink Lady Apple is winning) Each child is working on a story about apple picking. We are working on our addition sentences and used apples to help with finding the “sum.” In our ABC center, the children are working on patterns(-at, -ap -an). This helps the children solve unknown words and are noticing these patterns in other words. During Science/Art Center, children are learning about the life cycle of an apple and are learning how to draw and label the stages.

We’ll be learning about Fire Safety/Prevention next week and also why we have Columbus Day off!!
