South Boston Catholic Academy Third Grade
Summer Reading
Each student will be responsible for reading the book Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. This book is readily available at the local library. Students will be expected to be able to answer questions about the plot, characters, and setting of the story.
In addition to reading Freckle Juice, each student will be responsible for completing one reading log sheet (provided) by the first day of school. Each entry should be a minimum of 20 minutes long. Students may choose what reading material they would like to include (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.).
Supply List
1 1” Binder
1 Package of binder dividers
1 Package of white printer paper
2 Packages of lined, loose leaf paper
4 1 subject notebooks
8 Pocket folders (solid colored ONLY. No character folders please!)
3 Packs of index cards
1 Soft pencil pouch (no boxes please! They do not fit in the desks!)
1 Box of #2 pencils
1 Box of washable markers
1 Box of crayons (no more than 24 please!)
2 Thin dry erase markers (students will be using these often in class)
2 Glue sticks
1 Bottle of white glue
1 Package of erasers (whichever type you prefer)
1 Pair of scissors
2 Boxes of tissues
2 Rolls of paper towels
2 Containers of sanitizing wipes
1 Hand sanitizer
1 Box of Ziploc bags
Boys: Sandwich size
Girls: Gallon size
This week will be the last week of math club for the third grade! Thank you to all the students who committed themselves to attending and participating in extra activities focused on math topics!

Today, grade 3 walked back in time along the Freedom Trail! According to the Massachusetts state frameworks, state history is the focus of our social studies curriculum.
Students have been learning about the events leading up to the American Revolution and this was the perfect way to connect our learning outside of our classroom!
Some students were able to sit in the King’s Chapel and see the pews of Paul Revere and the governor! They saw the North Church, Old City Hall, and had lunch in City Hall Plaza. Ask your child who is buried in the metal structure in the Puritan’s first burial grounds!
Thank you to all of our chaperones and The Philanthropic Institute, who provided the grant that made this great trip possible! Also, thank you to the students, who were wonderfully behaved and were great representatives of SBCA!

The students in 3A are very busy with the holiday season quickly approaching! Take a peek at the pictures posted in the blog of the students hard at work during Writers Workshop!
We have completed the Science unit on ecosystems, and have started working on the new Social Studies unit about Massachusetts: Land and Early People. The students will be learning about the people and the land in MA when the Pilgrims first came to America, and how it compares to what we see today.
This week we will be finishing our study of scary stories in Reading. The students have been reading Goosebumps books by R.L. Stine with partners and writing some very interesting journal entries about what they notice to be true about scary stories. They are doing a fantastic job of picking out the descriptive details in these stories and trying to add some to their own pieces of writing.
In Math the students have been using Place Value Blocks and drawing pictures to help them regroup when they are subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers. They have been doing an excellent job!

Book Challenge- This months book will be Super Fudge by Judy Blume. The Challenge will be held on December 23rd.

We will not be having math club this Tuesday, November 10th. The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 17th.
Students received information about their first book report of the year! As always, we are happy to answer any questions you may have about the project. Students have seen examples of two projects completed last year. We will be practicing oral presentations in class so that they can be successful in this part of the project.
Please be mindful that students need to choose a book by Friday, November 6th and tell us so we can approve it. Everyone must be reading a chapter book.
