Mrs.Malloy’s KI class and Mrs. Barbuto’s KI class joined Miss Byrne’s class and traveled to Miss Marshall’s class to view a short video about the journey of a butterfly. Before the movie started, the children answered questions about the butterflies that they had in their classroom over the last few weeks. The first graders were impressed with how much the KI children knew. The video included alot of information that the first graders had learned.

I hope everyone got a chance to visit and enjoy the Art Show in the cafeteria. I would like to thank all the students for the time, effort, care and imagination that they put into their beautiful art objects. I would also like to thank Ms. Krim for her generousity of time in helping me to organize and hang the show.
Sometimes we forget how important art is in a child’s world so here are just a few reasons why they need it:
- Art stimulates both sides of the brain.
- 33% of kids are visual learners.
- There are studies that show that kids, who make art, read better and get better grades in science and mathematics.
- The kids learn by using their senses and art is ideal in this process.
- The kids need a place to express themselves at school.
- Art promotes self esteem
- Art encourages kids to give more attention to the physical space that surround them.
- Art develops hand and eye coordination.
- Art stimulates perception.
- Art teaches that there is more than one solution for a problem.
- Art teaches kids to think creatively to solve problems.
- Kids can share and reflect on their work of art and learn something about the world they live in.
- When art is integrated with the other subjects in the curriculum, kids commit more to the learning process.
- Art nourishes the human soul. One feels good doing it.
- Art brings the cultural resources of the community into the class.
- Art is valuable all by itself.
Art from the show will be available for viewing at artsonia.com in the next few days.

K1A and K1B took advantage of this beautiful sunny day to do some outdoor science.
Students looked at a small car and discussed all the ways a car could move. Mrs. Barbuto placed the car on the ground and everyone watched as the car moved own its own. Students took turns guessing what was moving the car. Mrs. Barbuto gave a big hint when she shaded the car from the sun. The students guessed that the car was being moved by solar power! To test the solar power theory Mrs. Barbuto used several types of sunglasses to shade the car. Each time the sun was blocked, the car stopped moving.
We had a great science lesson!

Thanks to Miss Marshal for letting Grade 1B visit her classroom and use her interactive whiteboard. The children went on a virtual dinosaur dig. They read the directions each step of the way to tell them what to do and what to use. It was so much fun!! Next, the children are going to make their own dinosaur fossils. Stay tuned!!

Hello Everybody!
Good to be back here in my classroom and looking forward to a wonderful week with the students.
Your children are on their way to being K2 Students. We do have some readers in the class and that makes me very happy. I did want to remind all of you to keep reading to your child and encourage them all to write at home. I would love to have all of the children start writing in their classroom journal. Have them draw pictures and write what they have drawn under them. And then lead into one or two sentences. The students will need your guidance to do this but it will get them ready for writing and knowing sentence structure for K2. Don’t worry I will journal with them in class and expose them to this before they are to do this with you at home.
We are learning all about dinosaurs this week and animals next week . What would be better than learning all about animals in a classroom? Learning about them at the Zoo! We are looking forward to this trip. Can’t wait.
Our Butterflies have not come out of their cocoons yet. We’ll let you know all about it when they do.
Let’s have a great four weeks together!

Grade One students did an OUTSTANDING job hosting the Ascension Thursday Mass at Gate of Heaven Church! The children received many compliments regarding their reading, responding to prayers, singing, behavior and greeting people at the entrances to the church. It was extra special that Padre Sheehan gave the sermon and spoke right to the first graders.

I can’t believe how quickly the year has progressed. The ceramic mural created by Grade 6 has been installed in the school lobby but has some grouting to be completed and then needs to be sealed. In grade 5 we have been creating art using words in the style of Robert Indiana. Students in grade 3 have taken a strong liking to weaving while grade 2 has been experimenting with sculpture and the 3rd dimension. Next Thursday the 20th will be the Art Show and the children are very excited to display their work. I hope you all can attend.
