Middle School students at South Boston Catholic Academy continue to soar into the past each day when they enter Social Studies class. Grade 6 adventures the furthest back in time as they travel with their passports to the ancient world. They have just begun their travels into Ancient Greece where they learned the origins of our recent Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, studied the mythology that brought entertainment and education to Greeks and role played the early government of Athens that existed before the Democracy that our country models today. Later this week students will be creating their own Greek shield which will reflect the many legacies of Ancient Greece.
The seventh grade has emerged from the American Revolution and is now shaping a new nation. They are currently learning about how and why the Constitution was created. Each day we discuss how this over 200 year old document still plays out in our everyday lives. Students will be creating their own government tree by through similes of tree parts and the branches of the United States government.
Grade 8 has left World War I and is now examining the domestic issues of the United States in the late 1920s: The Great Depression. Students have compared the cost of daily items then and now and have discovered the value of a dollar over time. Students are now tracing the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt and examining how his New Deal legislation lifted the spirits and economic hardships of many Americans. After listening to FDR’s famous fire side chat on the banking crisis, students wrote their own modern day fire side chats raising awareness to issues of war, healthcare and education.
Grade 8 will be having their Chapter 25/Great Depression Quiz on Thursday, March 11th!
Grade 7 has been recently studying their “Civics Handbook” a unit on United States government. Students have been learning about how the Constitution was first written and how it plays out in our everyday lives today!
Review of the chapter will begin tomorrow in class. Students will be taking their test on Tuesday, March 16th.
Grade 6 will be having their test on Chapter 8/Ancient Greece on Thursday, March 18th. All students were given their study guides today to prepare for the test.
Computer Lab — A reminder to the school community – adopt good security practices. Never give your passwords to anyone else – not even your friends. Strong passwords help protect you, your computer, your files and your privacy.
That being said, and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, file this under Computer Lab humor:
During a recent password audit at the Bank of Ireland it was found that Paddy O’Toole was using the following password:“MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofyBerlin When asked why he had such a long password he replied: “I was told it had to be at least 8 characters long and include one capital!”
Students in 3B learned about homelessness and why as Catholics we are called to help! Students organized a 100 Calorie Pack drive for the hopeFound shelter in Jamaica Plain. Thank you to all who donated snacks! The residents of the shelter are now able to receive a snack when they sign in to the shelter.
A special thank you to Elizabeth Condron, volunteer coordinator at the shelter, for coming and answering our questions about homelessness. Students learned many things, but the most common fact was that homeless people have jobs and that not everyone who IS homeless LOOKS homeless!
In 2A, we have successfully started our unit on dinosaurs. The students pretended like they were paleontologists and made imprints into Play Dough of different types of objects! We have begun our study on fossils and life long ago! Everyone is very excited about this dinosaur unit! We are planning on visiting the Museum of Science before April Vacation for a Dinosaur/Fossil scavenger hunt!
Students will have Standardized Testing the week of March 22-26. Please be sure they get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast! There will be no homework that week, however, I will be sending home the Reading Log for them to complete each night!
Thank you for all you help and support with the students for double digit adding and subtracting with Regrouping! I think they really get the hang of it, which is amazing. I have already begun to revisit money, as I realize it was a tricky subject for students.
